The Return of Fate

The Truck Stops Here

Leona escapes from Tangenic Systems building and calls the first person she can think of, Helena Vale. They agree to meet at Helena’s location at the Run of the Mill bar. En route, she reviews some disturbing videos sent to her by Imogie, one of her contacts on The Net, ripped from a screen imaging data bot that Leona planted at Tangenic. The videos are disturbing, showing a series of experiments in scientific human torture testing. The remaining data dump displays all of their research material from that day. When she arrives at the bar, Ted is a third wheel, So Leona and Helena beat it and Ted goes into the bar to have a drink and reconnoiter with Frank Henderson.

Meanwhile, Cyndi pushes the corpse of the medical attendant off of her body after slipping out of the straps on the bed. On the attendant’s shirt is an ID badge that reads Tangenic Systems , bum bum bum. She cleans the blood off of her face, grabs the wheelchair by the door and escapes into the hall. Her wheels are squeaking and she has to slip into a supply closet when one of the patients in the other room starts screaming from the sound.

Ted discovers that someone by the name of Leona O’Malley was the last survivor of a supposed car crash that left her parents dead. This happened shortly after she was charged with hacking a heavily encrypted database of an international company. He also discover from a cell relay sweep that the the owner of one of the cell phones is a Helena Vale, registered in Illinois.

Helena and Leona are travelling on the highway east of Houston towards Big Thicket, a national park, to find a safe space from Leona’s believed pursuers. It turns out she wasn’t paranoid without good reason, because they are being pursued by a dark colored sedan. She uses her MNHD to discover that the pursuers are communicating on a highly secure network. They do a U-Turn on the highway and attempt to escape their pursuers and stop at the Gas-N-Gulp truck stop a few miles back towards Houston. As they enter the Gas-N-Gulp, two men pull up in the sedan and exit the vehicle. They are in black suits and ties and are wearing sunglasses…at night.

Cyndi continues her progress through the Tangen facility and checks out the room across the hall after two sets of footsteps leave her vicinity. She finds that there are three beds, occupied, inside the room. One of the subjects is mutated with insectoid appendages. Another is red-faced, hairless, and their skin is tight around their teeth. The other is invisible. She comforts the the insectoid person, who was screaming earlier with her empathy power.

Leona and Helena scramble to do something. Leona steals a knife from the store and heads for the back door. Helena stays to confront the two men. When Leona exits, another man in a black suit holds a gun on her and instructs her to “Get in the van, you are coming with me”. She talks him out of it and convinces him he has the wrong lady. She uses this opportunity to sneak around and slash the tires of the van and the sedan. Helena confront the two men, but they pull out their guns and shoot the clerk and close the blinds on the windows. They are walking her out the back door and start squabbling over the location of the other woman. Helena waves her hands around and acts a little crazy while Leona is slashing tires.

Cyndi leaves the room with the three mutants and heads back down the hall, sensing more consciousnesses and attempts to escape through the elevator when the glass doors to her right open and a man in a white lab coat heads towards her…

The Story, From the Top
And So Below

Our heroes have arrived in Houston, TX – one of the busiest port cities in the U.S.

Leona O’Malley has heard some disparaging information from a source on The Net about her family’s supposed car crash. That maybe it wasn’t a car crash and that it’s part of a conspiracy perpetrated by some government funded private organization that goes by the name of Tangenic Systems. Leona decides to investigate Tangenic herself and hits a roadblock, or rather, a giant guy in a suspicious elevator with a gun. She gets out and considers her options. She also performs information gathering for her co-collaborator, Helena Vane.

Helena is following a lead on her sister’s disappearance with the help of Leona. She stops at the Run of the Mill bar to question the bar tender. After some persuading, he informs her that Jack Tearman would definitely know something about any disappearing girls. She tries to confront him at the bar and two men push her out of the back door. She dispatches them easily and runs after Tearman, where she meets two men using strange hand gestures in front of her.

Ted Williams has just returned from an excursion into Big Thicket, looking into reports of animal mutilations that smelled strongly of anthropological interest (and rot). He meets his old friend, Jim Highwall and they investigate the area for more information. He contactsFrank Henderson for backup if things should go south. Afterwards, he decides to have a drink at the Run of the Mill bar not far from the airport, where he meets Helena, who is in trouble with a couple occultists in leather jackets wielding a strange power over Helena. Helena kicks their butts as well, Ted is extremely curious and finds a Squid Coin in one of the men’s pockets.

Cyndi finds herself in a completely different and decidedly stranger predicament. She was travelling in the somewhat familiar, but otherworldly Dreamscape where she learns that her power transcends the physical. Then she awakens to the cold hard reality of the mysterious medical facility where she is strapped to a bed. When trying to escape, a man comes in with a needle and tries to inject her with something. She activates her telekinesis and jams a butter knife into his neck. He now lies bleeding on top of her, but she notices something about his shirt…
